Abba Kabir Yusuf, governor of Kano, has met with Abdullahi Abbas, chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, and Alhassan Ado Doguwa, an APC chieftain.

The meeting, which also had other APC stakeholders in attendance, took place on Wednesday in Kano amid rumours of the governor’s planned defection to the ruling party.

Although details of the discussions were not officially disclosed, the engagement has fuelled political speculations in the state.

The meeting comes days after members of the Kwankwasiyya movement, and supporters of Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano and national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), said they are considering defecting to the APC.

The NNPP is the platform on which Yusuf was elected governor in 2023.

Yet, on Tuesday, Kwankwaso warned members of the party against political betrayal.

Kwankwaso said he was aware that a few individuals were considering switching sides, noting that history has shown that those who abandoned the group have not succeeded politically.
