Salihu Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman (Northwest) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has expressed concern over the current state of despondency in Nigeria, urging prominent political leaders to unite and challenge President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Lukman highlighted the need for unity among key political figures, including Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Peter Obi, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Chief Rotimi Amaechi, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. He questioned whether these leaders would allow their individual ambitions to hinder Nigeria’s democratic progress or come together to forge a united front capable of transforming the nation’s democracy and addressing systemic corruption.

He lamented the advanced stage of ‘state capture’ at the federal level, noting that opposition leaders such as Atiku, Obi, and Kwankwaso are currently operating in isolation. Lukman also pointed out that some APC leaders, including Osinbajo, Amaechi, Fayemi, Amosun, El-Rufai, and Aregbesola, have been marginalized within the party, reducing their influence in Nigerian politics.

Lukman called for these leaders to commit to building strong political parties capable of challenging the APC and ensuring the future of Nigerian democracy. He prayed for unity among patriotic political leaders across all parties and emphasized the need for selflessness and a commitment to strengthening democratic institutions.

Addressing the current economic hardship, Lukman acknowledged that while some officials of the Tinubu administration have attributed the difficulties to the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, both administrations belong to the APC. He argued that the APC’s popularity stemmed from the failings of the PDP but noted that the challenges facing Nigeria today are more severe than those under the PDP in 2015.

Lukman stressed that the failures of the Buhari administration are a shared responsibility among APC leaders, including President Tinubu. He asserted that without Buhari, the APC’s victory over the PDP in 2015 would have been nearly impossible, and by extension, Tinubu’s presidency might not have materialized.
