The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS/CEDEAO) has officially suspended the Republic of Niger’s membership until constitutional order is restored, following the military coup that overthrew Mohamed Bazoum’s government.
The decision was made during the 64th ordinary session held on December 10, 2023, in Abuja. Despite previous considerations of a coup attempt, ECOWAS now recognizes the overthrow and has suspended Niger from all decision-making bodies until constitutional order is reinstated.
The proposal to lift sanctions in exchange for the release of deposed President Mohamed Bazoum was rejected by the military junta. Sanctions will be maintained against Niger.
