Federal Govt Shuts Down Over 13.5m Social Media Accounts For Offensive

The Federal Government has confirmed the closure of 13,597,057 social media accounts across platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X, citing offensive content and breaches of the Code of Practice 2024.

 

The figure was disclosed in the Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report submitted by global tech giants including Google, Microsoft, and TikTok.

 

According to the report, a total of 58,909,112 offensive posts were taken down, while authorities also handled 754,629 registered complaints from users. Out of these, 420,439 contents were restored after successful appeals.

 

The report highlights the platforms’ commitment to aligning with Nigeria’s regulatory guidelines while protecting users from online harm.

 

NITDA spokesperson, Hadiza Umar, commended tech firms for their compliance and emphasized government’s resolve to strengthen digital safety.

 

She noted that collaboration with industry players, civil society, and regulators will continue to promote user protection, transparency, and digital literacy across the nation’s online space.
