The Federal Government has commenced negotiations with the United States to acquire 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters aimed at significantly boosting the combat capabilities of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). The AH-1Z Viper, designed by Bell Helicopter, is the only attack helicopter with fully integrated air-to-air missile capability, offering advanced sensors for precision targeting and mission survivability.

NAF Spokesman Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame confirmed that Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, led a high-level team to the U.S. for a programme review meeting with U.S. officials and Bell Textron representatives. The helicopters are part of 61 new platforms expected for delivery in 2025.

Air Marshal Abubakar thanked the U.S. for its enduring partnership and noted that the acquisition will enhance NAF’s operational efficiency, readiness, and capacity in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and other threats to national security. The Air Chief also inspected U.S. Marine Corps squadrons managing the AH-1Z to adopt best practices for operating and sustaining the platform.

This milestone reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and protecting lives and property through bold, strategic investments in modern defence capabilities.
