A fire outbreak has engulfed the popular Kano GSM Market, Farm Centre, Tarauni local government area, destroying a significant portion of Dan Sulaika Plaza and leading to the loss of goods worth millions of naira.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, when most of the traders were yet to return from Eid prayers.
Speaking to journalists at the scene, the treasurer of the Farm Centre Market Association, Hassan Saminu, confirmed that the fire started around noon, catching most shop owners off guard.
“By the time we arrived, the fire had already spread across most of the shops. It started from one of the shops where we suspect a solar battery and electricity connection caused a spark.”
Although there were no reported casualties, the financial impact of the fire is substantial.
Firefighters and emergency response teams arrived at the scene and were able to contain the blaze before it extended to nearby buildings.
Dan Sulaika Plaza is one of the busiest sections of the Farm Centre GSM Market, a major hub for mobile phone businesses.
When contacted over the cause of the inferno, the Kano State Fire Service Public Relations Officer, Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi, told journalists that the firefighters who cover the operations are yet to be back in office.
