Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has fulfilled his campaign promise to improve livelihood through investment in agribusiness by distributing free fertilizers worth over N1 billion to smallholder farmers in Kano State.
The initiative aims to reduce production costs and boost food security. The distribution of over N1 billion worth of NPK fertilizers, produced by the state-owned Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO), benefits 52,800 smallholder farmers across the 44 Local Government areas.
The state executive council has also approved the procurement of over N5 billion worth of fertilizers to be made available to farmers at a subsidized rate. Governor Yusuf emphasized the government’s readiness to sustain food production through regular supply of fertilizers and strengthening of state manufacturing centers like KASCO to revert revenue flow and sustain the state’s economy.
Beneficiaries, including women farmers and people living with disabilities, will receive 25kg of NPK fertilizer to support their farming activities and improve their livelihood. The governor’s initiative is a significant step towards achieving food security and improving the lives of smallholder farmers in Kano State.
The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, commended the governor’s initiative, saying he received complaints of the shortage of fertilizers from various district heads and, fortunately, the Governor has solved the problem. He urged stakeholders to use the fertilizers judiciously and maintain what is right. He also called on the well-to-do to assist the masses, especially during this period of food shortages and skyrocketing prices.
