Gunmen armed with heavy weapons blocked the highway from Gusau to Funtua, abducting an unknown number of travelers.
A traveler stuck in the area, Yusuf Tsafe, told Channels Television that early Thursday morning, the bandits blocked the main road and set up a barricade in the Tazame area of the road.
According to him, the bandits came in large numbers with about 50 motorcycles, each carrying 3 people, where they kidnapped an unknown number of travelers.
A different traveler also confirmed to Channels Television that this Thursday morning, bandits blocked the Magazu to Kucheri road which also joins the Gusau to Funtua highway.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the Zamfara State Police, ASP Yazid Abubakar, said that more officers, especially riot police, have been sent to the area to clear the road.
Zamfara is one of the states in the north-west of Nigeria that are suffering from bandit groups, who are abducting a large number of people for ransom and stealing property and burning people’s houses.
