Senator Karimi Sunday, the representative for Kogi West Senatorial District, has disclosed that the position currently held by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, chairing the Senate Committee on Local Content, was previously vacated by her predecessor, Senator Sadiku Abubakar Ohere, who represented Kogi Central Senatorial District.
Senator Karimi made this revelation while apologizing to his colleagues, including Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio, following a tense exchange between the Senate President and Senator Natasha in a viral video footage.
The confrontation arose after a seat rearrangement in the Senate chamber, during which Senator Natasha voiced her dissatisfaction with the change.
Senator Karimi’s candid statement highlighted that the valuable opportunity Senator Natasha now holds was largely due to the efforts of Senator Ohere, who had fought for the position before stepping out of the Red Chamber.
Karimi expressed his surprise at Natasha’s decision to blame him for the incident, explaining that the rearrangement was an unintended oversight by the Chief Whip, made in accordance with Senate standing orders to accommodate senators who had recently defected from the opposition.
Recalling how he and his colleague from Kogi East, Senator Jibrin Echocho, had welcomed Natasha when she first joined the Senate, Karimi emphasized that both of them had pushed for her appointment as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content following Senator Ohere’s departure from the role.
Despite their support, Karimi mentioned that he had avoided engaging in any public confrontation with Natasha, choosing instead to address the issue privately.
Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
