Kano earmarks N2.2b for school feeding programme

Kano State Government has re-introduced a school feeding program across public primary schools and early child care estimated at N2.2 billion.

The re-introduction captured in the 2025 budgetary allocation is targeted to improve nutritional status, learning capacities, enrollment, and retention of school-aged children through community participation.

The much-cherished feeding program under the National Home Grown Feeding Programme was suspended in Kano three years ago over irregularities, including poor service delivery and misappropriation of funds, which grossly affected the success achieved.

Besides, the government earmarked an additional N1.8 billion in 2025 appropriation to feed students in public secondary boarding schools that were reopened by the present administration.

The board schools were shut down by the immediate past administration for security reasons.

Commissioner for Planning and Budget, Musa Sulaiman Shannon, hinted at the new development while briefing journalists on the sectoral allocation and general breakdown of 2025 appropriation.

According to Shannon, education got the lion’s share of over N205 billion representing 29 per cent of the total budget size, owing to the shared commitment of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to rejuvenate the lost glory and improve teaching and learning outcomes.

On budget line vote under education, the commissioner confirmed various sums for the construction of new classrooms and rehabilitation of dilapidated structures with funds meant for procurement of computers, and digital gadgets to model schools.

Shanono highlighted allocations for course accreditation at Kano State Polytechnic and Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, at N2 billion. Purchase and installation of 100 computers and accessories at the sum of N150 million.

“General repairs of the motor park at Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Dambatta N155 million, grand and contribution for overseas university students N912 million and grand and contribution (scholarship allowances) local students N2. 7 billion among other allocations,” Shanono said.

Tagged “Budget of Hope, Human Capital, and Economic Development”, Yusuf recently assented a budget over N719 billion into law. The 2025 appropriation represented 36 per cent recurrent and 64 per cent capital expenditure.
