As part of collective efforts at curbing thuggery, gangsterism, YAN DABA fights, phone snatching and other crimes in Kano State, the state government, in collaboration with security agencies, has commenced the profiling of repentant youths who were once involved in violent crimes.
The exercise, which was flagged off at the Kano State Police Command, Bompai, under the Safe Corridor Project, an initiative of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, began with the profiling of over eighty repentant youths who surrendered willingly, laid down their arms, and denounced violence in the state.
The event attracted heads of security agencies in the state, including the State Police Commissioner, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori; the State Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency; the State Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps; the Commander General, State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa; and the State Commandant, Vigilante Group.
Also in attendance were the State’s Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs and Coordinator of the Safe Corridor Project Comr. Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya; Sarkin Shanun Kano, Alhaji Shehu Mohammed; DanâAmar Kano, Alhaji Aliyu Umar Harazimi; among other dignitaries.
In his remarks at the event, Comr. Waiya expressed the readiness and determination of the Kano State Government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to grant amnesty to youths who willingly surrender and denounce violence. He further explained that the Safe Corridor Project is a non-kinetic strategy adopted by the government as part of our broader efforts to end thuggery and violent crimes in the state.
“We are fully committed to this cause, and I therefore call on all youths still involved in thuggery to embrace this opportunity so that they can become more useful to themselves and productive members of our society” said Waiya.
On his part, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, who endorsed the initiative, commended the state government on the Safe Corridor Project and expressed the readiness of his command to fully participate in the process.
In their separate remarks, other heads of security agencies, representatives of the traditional institutions, elder statesmen, and the Ulama all endorsed the Safe Corridor Project. They also urged those already enrolled to invite others to join the exercise, with a view to ending violence and criminality for a safer and more progressive Kano State.
Some of the repentant youths, including Buzu and Mai Dangi, pledged not only to invite others to enroll in the programme but also vowed to abandon thuggery, gang fights, and all forms of criminality in Kano State.
