The Nigerian Army has made a significant historical appointment by naming Lieutenant Colonel Onyinyechi Anele as the first female spokesperson for the Army.

This landmark decision reflects a progressive step towards gender inclusivity within the military ranks, particularly in leadership and public relations roles.

Lieutenant Colonel Anele is set to assume her new role as the Acting Director of Army Public Relations on April 22, 2025. She succeeds Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, who has been reassigned to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre.

This transition marks a pivotal moment in the history of the Nigerian Army, as no female officer has previously held this position since its establishment over five decades ago.

Qualifications and experience

Anele is a member of Direct Regular Course 15 and holds fellowship status with the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).

Her educational background includes completing a six-month strategic course at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, which equips her with essential skills for her new responsibilities.

Prior to this appointment, she served in various capacities that have prepared her for this leadership role. Notably, she was attached to the Department of Civil-Military Relations at Defence Headquarters and previously worked as a Public Relations Officer in the Office of the Chief of Army Staff.

The appointment of Lieutenant Colonel Anele is not just a personal achievement but also represents broader implications for gender representation in military leadership roles. It signals an evolving perspective within military institutions regarding women’s capabilities and contributions. As she steps into this high-profile position, Anele will be responsible for managing communications between the army and the public, shaping public perception, and addressing media inquiries related to army operations and policies.

This historic milestone is expected to inspire other women within military ranks and beyond, demonstrating that leadership opportunities are increasingly accessible regardless of gender.
