In a renewed drive to enhance digital inclusion and connectivity across Borno South, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume has announced plans to empower 1,000 constituents with MTN MoMo Point-of-Sale (POS) machines and distribute 5,000 free MTN SIM cards.

The announcement followed a courtesy visit by the management team of MTN Nigeria to the Senator’s residence in Maiduguri. The visit was aimed at briefing the lawmaker on the progress of network restoration efforts across the senatorial district.

Borno South, like many parts of the state, has suffered years of telecommunication disruption due to the Boko Haram insurgency. Senator Ndume has remained at the forefront of efforts to restore connectivity and strengthen digital access for his people.

“Last year, as part of our self-reliance initiatives, we trained 800 youths from Borno South in POS operations, provided them with machines and starter packs worth ₦100,000 each,” Ndume stated. “Having monitored the positive outcomes, we will now train an additional 1,000 beneficiaries through Velay Nigeria Limited. I have also directed my aides, Junaid and Usman, to coordinate the registration of 5,000 constituents for free MTN SIM cards — many of whom lost theirs during the crisis.”

The Senator further disclosed plans to partner with MTN Nigeria to establish Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres across Borno South, in collaboration with the Senate Committee on Communications, to boost educational access and digital literacy.

Earlier, Mr. Noyi Wakili, Sales and Trade Development Manager of MTN Nigeria, commended Senator Ndume’s unwavering commitment to improving communication infrastructure in the region. He provided updates on the restoration of MTN network services in Gwoza, Damboa, and other communities, while assuring that efforts are ongoing to improve coverage in Uba, Fikayel, and parts of Chibok.

Highlights of the visit included the presentation of branded MTN souvenirs to the Senator in appreciation of his steadfast support and partnership in ensuring full network restoration across Borno South.
