NEMA Commences distribution of relief items to flood victims in Yobe

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has commenced distribution of relief materials to victims of flash flood disaster that ravaged in Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The exercise was approved by Zubaida Umar, the Director General of NEMA which took place at the Potiskum town, headquarters of Potiskum LGA of the state.

According to Zubaida who represented by Abdullahi Garba, Zonal Coordinator Maiduguri Office, said the intervention follows the devastating flash flood incident of 15th August 2025, which submerged several communities and left thousands of households in distress.

She revealed that a joint assessment conducted by NEMA in collaboration with other humanitarian partners revealed that 2,557 households were directly affected, with several homes either destroyed or severely damaged.

“The disaster impacted 21 locations, including Old Prison, Filin Mashe, Unguwar Makafi, Unguwar Jaje Bakin Kwari, Afghanistan, Tsangaya, Karofi, Bayan Garejin Dan Juma, Jigawa, Behind NTA, Makarahuta, Tandari, Nahuta, Rugan Fulani, Ramin Kasa, Uganda, Behind New Prison, Gadan Talakawa Arikime, Yindiski Bayan Stadium, Unguwar Wazamn Dan Fulani, Yandiksi Ganuwa, Filin Allah, and Helma Saleh/Kukuwale.

He noted,”The relief intervention underscores the commitment of NEMA and its partners to providing timely humanitarian assistance, mitigating the impact of the disaster, and supporting communities in rebuilding their livelihoods.”

Surajo said NEMA worked with Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and Local Emergency and Security Agencies for the distribution.
