Security agencies in Kwara State have raised concerns over a growing trend of violent crimes involving young adults, with cases now extending beyond cyber fraud to kidnapping and murder.

In the latest case, the Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a 21-year-old suspect, Soliu Olarewaju Mujeeb, over the alleged kidnap and murder of a 60-year-old electrical technician, Olarewaju Olusegun Afolabi, in Ilorin.

Addressing journalists in Ilorin, the State Commandant of the NSCDC, Abbas Mohammed, said the suspect allegedly lured the victim, believed to be his employer, to an uncompleted building in the Kangile area under the pretext of securing an electrical contract.

Curious TV news reports that the suspect reportedly attacked the victim with a plank on his head, leading to his death, and later demanded a ₦2 million ransom from family members in an attempt to cover up the crime.

The suspect reportedly confessed to the crime, claiming financial gain was his motive and that he intended to collect the ₦2 million ransom.

The victim’s son called for justice and urged security agencies to ensure diligent prosecution of the case.

The NSCDC says investigations are ongoing and that the suspect will be handed over to the appropriate security agency for further prosecution after preliminary inquiries.
