The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has expressed his willingness to accept any law approved by the Sokoto state government, dispelling rumors of his potential dethronement.
Represented by Dr. Muhammadu Jabbi Kilgori, a Kingmaker and member of the Sultanate council, the Sultan clarified the Sultanate’s understanding of the government’s intentions at a public hearing on Local Government and chieftaincy law.
The hearing, held at the Sokoto state house of Assembly, aimed to amend the tenure of local government chairmen and chieftaincy matters in the state.
The state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Nasiru Mohammed Binji, presented an executive bill seeking to vest the power to appoint or dethrone traditional rulers in the state government.
The proposed law, based on the federal constitution, aims to enhance the administration of local government and chieftaincy matters.
Additionally, the bill seeks to increase the tenure of local government chairmen from two to three years, allowing them to execute projects and programs for the state’s socio-security and economic development.
