President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the successful elimination of a senior Islamic State (ISIS) leader, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok, during a joint counterterrorism operation conducted by Nigerian and United States armed forces in the Lake Chad Basin.
Tinubu disclosed this on Saturday in a statement from the Presidential Villa, describing the operation as a breakthrough in the ongoing fight against terrorism.
According to the President, the operation was carried out overnight through close collaboration between the Nigerian Armed Forces and the United States military.
He said early assessments confirmed that Abu-Mainok and several of his lieutenants were killed during a coordinated strike on the terrorist leader’s compound in the Lake Chad Basin region.
Tinubu described the operation as a significant demonstration of the growing security partnership between Nigeria and the United States in tackling terrorism and violent extremism.
“Nigeria appreciates this partnership with the United States in advancing our shared security objectives,” the President stated.
He expressed gratitude to former U.S. President Donald Trump for what he described as his leadership and support toward the anti-terrorism efforts.
The President also commended military personnel from both countries for their professionalism, bravery, and commitment during the operation.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s determination to sustain decisive military offensives against terrorist groups and criminal enclaves across the country.
He added that the government would continue strengthening international security cooperation aimed at restoring peace and stability in affected regions.
