9 Burnt to Death, 17 Injured in Katsina Auto Crash

Tragedy struck along the Kankia–Katsina Road on Saturday night as nine passengers lost their lives while 17 others sustained injuries in a fatal road crash involving a commercial bus and a trailer at Kwanar Gidan Mutum Daya in Katsina State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Katsina Sector Command, confirmed that the accident occurred at about 8:03 p.m. and involved a Toyota Hummer commercial bus and a trailer, with 26 persons affected in the devastating collision.

According to the FRSC, rescue teams from the RS1.35 Kankia Unit Command responded swiftly to a distress call and arrived at the scene within 23 minutes to commence rescue operations alongside other emergency responders.

The Command disclosed that 17 victims sustained varying degrees of injuries, including fractures, broken legs and severe cuts, while nine persons died in the crash. Four of the deceased were reportedly burnt beyond recognition after the commercial vehicle caught fire moments after the collision.

All injured victims were evacuated to General Hospital Kankia for urgent treatment, while the corpses of the deceased were deposited accordingly.

The FRSC sympathised with the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the accident.

The Corps added that investigations were ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash, while urging motorists to obey traffic rules, avoid reckless driving and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, especially during the Eid El Kabir travel period.
