The Senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly and Turaki of Ilorin Emirate, Distinguished Senator Saliu Mustapha, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development was contained in a resignation letter personally signed by Senator Mustapha and addressed to the APC Ward Chairman of Gambari Ward 1, Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State, dated August 14, 2026.
Curious Television News reports that the letter was obtained from the Senator’s verified Facebook account on Thursday evening, August 20.
Senator Mustapha said his decision followed careful consideration of recent developments within the APC in Kwara State, as well as weeks of consultations with political stakeholders, supporters, constituents across Kwara Central and other well-meaning Kwarans.
He described the decision as a difficult one, stressing that his political philosophy has always been anchored on people, principles and purpose.
According to him, when a political platform no longer sufficiently aligns with those convictions and the aspirations of the people he represents, “the honourable thing to do is to chart a new course.”
The Senator expressed appreciation to the leadership of the APC, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the relationships and experiences he gained during his years in the party.
He, however, assured his constituents, supporters and political associates that although his political platform may change, his principles, purpose and commitment to the people remain unchanged.
“I remain steadfast in my service to the people of Kwara Central, Kwara State and Nigeria at large,” he stated.
The resignation has already heightened political anticipation ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political observers describing it as a major development capable of reshaping the political landscape in Kwara State.
There is growing speculation that the development could set the stage for a fierce contest over the Kwara Central Senatorial seat, potentially involving Senator Mustapha and the incumbent Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
With the 2027 political battle gradually taking shape, the latest development is expected to trigger fresh alignments, consultations and realignments across the state, as political actors and constituents watch closely to see how the unfolding drama will play out.
