The newly constituted Kano State Open Government Partnership (OGP) State Steering Committee has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening transparency, accountability and citizens’ participation in governance across the state.
The Committee committed on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, during its familiarisation meeting held at the Conference Hall of the Ministry for Public Procurement, Projects Monitoring and Evaluation (MPPP&ME), Kano.
The meeting provided members with an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the OGP framework, understand their respective roles and responsibilities, and set strategic direction towards the effective implementation of Kano State’s OGP commitments.
Speaking at the meeting, the Government Co-Chair of the Committee, Hon. Comr. Nura Iro Ma’aji, commended the OGP Secretariat for its coordination of the process and acknowledged the commitment of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, towards advancing open and accountable governance.
He said the success of OGP requires genuine political will, institutional commitment and collective responsibility from all stakeholders.
“Open government cannot be achieved by government alone. It requires political will, commitment and the active participation of the people. His Excellency has demonstrated the political will to ensure that government is open, accountable and responsive to the people of Kano State.”
The Civil Society Co-Chair, Alh. Abdurrahman Abdu, described the new composition of the Steering Committee as a significant step towards deeper collaboration between government and civil society.
According to him, civil society organisations should no longer be viewed merely as observers of government activities, but as active partners in shaping and implementing policies that affect citizens.
“For the first time, civil society is not merely watching government business; we are part of the process and part of policy implementation. The composition of this State Steering Committee gives me confidence that the government is genuinely ready to open its government to the people.”
Also speaking, the Kano OGP State Coordinator, Hon. Musaddiq Kabir Adam, pledged his absolute commitment, alongside his team at the Secretariat, to the successful implementation of the state’s OGP commitments.
He assured members and stakeholders that the Secretariat would continue to provide the necessary coordination and facilitate effective collaboration among government institutions, civil society organisations, development partners, the media and other relevant stakeholders.
“Our responsibility is to ensure that OGP becomes more than a framework on paper. We are committed to working with every stakeholder to translate the principles of transparency, accountability and citizen participation into practical outcomes that improve the lives of the people of Kano State.”
The State Coordinator further emphasised that the strength of Kano OGP lies in its One OGP approach, where government and civil society work as equal partners towards a common objective of promoting open, transparent, accountable and citizen-centred governance.
The meeting marks an important step in the renewed implementation of Kano State’s OGP agenda and reinforces the commitment of the new State Steering Committee to working collectively for better governance and improved outcomes for the people of Kano State.
