The Senate has again extended the implementation period of the capital component of the 2025 budget by three months.

The new terminal date for the budget is 30 September, according to a decision the lawmakers took after emerging from an executive session on Thursday in Abuja.

The budget was initially extended to 31 March 2026 and later extended again to 30 June 2026 on the request of the Presidency.

As the June deadline approached, lawmakers again acted on another request to extend the capital budget to 30 September 2026.

President Bola Tinubu had signed the 2025 budget of N54.99 trillion on 28 February 2025.

The capital component was N23.96 trillion.

On Thursday, at a session presided over by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, senators defended the new extension, saying it was to allow for adequate funding of ongoing projects carried over into 2026.

Incidentally, the country is also implementing the 2026 budget, which was increased to N68.32 trillion in April.

Tinubu has promised to end the era of multiple budgets with the 2026 budget.
