Governor Abdullahi Sule has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, a former Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.

In a statement he personally signed, the Governor lamented that death has again robbed the state of an illustrious son, describing the deceased as an accomplished public servant, courageous legislator, and devoted son of Eggon land.

He lauded Senator Akwashiki’s humility, commitment, and service to his people, noting that his journey as a politician demonstrated a deep connection with the common man.

“The death of the distinguished Senator is painful not only to his family, the Eggon nation, and the people of Nasarawa North, but also to our entire state and the Nigerian legislature.

“We shall continue to cherish his legacy of honor, leadership, and steadfast commitment to the progress of our dear state.

“On behalf of the Government and People of Nasarawa State, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, His Royal Highness the Aren Eggon, the Eggon Traditional Council, the National Assembly, and all who mourn this great son of Nasarawa.

“May Almighty God grant his soul eternal rest and give us all the strength to bear this painful loss,” the statement read further.

Senator Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North in the National Assembly, died on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at the age of 52, in a hospital in India, after a protracted illness.

He was first elected to the Nigerian Senate in 2019 and was re-elected for a second term, becoming the only senator from Nasarawa North to secure two consecutive terms since the creation of the state in 1996.

Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Mr. Akwashiki was widely known for his strong grassroots political base and focus on constituency-driven projects.

He is survived by a wife, children, and many relations.
