The Kaduna State House of Assembly has initiated an inquiry into the financial transactions of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, spanning his tenure from 2015 to 2023.

This demand comes amid accusations from current Governor Uba Sani, who alleged inheriting a substantial debt burden from his predecessor, hindering his ability to meet payroll obligations.

During a town hall meeting in Kaduna, Governor Sani expressed frustration over the state’s financial challenges, attributing them to a depleted treasury upon assuming office.

Consequently, the Assembly has formed a fact-finding committee to delve into the matter.

Sakinatu Idris, the Clerk of the Assembly, issued a directive to the Kaduna State Ministry of Finance, requesting detailed records of all financial transactions conducted between May 2015 and May 2023.

The Assembly seeks information on loans, project allocations, salary payments, and contractor engagements during El-Rufai’s administration.

The letter instructs the Finance Commissioner to furnish the committee with relevant documents, including executive council minutes, contractor payments, and modalities for contract payments. The Assembly has set a deadline for submission, underscoring the urgency of the investigation.

This move by the Assembly reflects a commitment to transparency and accountability in governance, as it seeks to assess the financial stewardship of the previous administration and address concerns raised by Governor Sani.
