Mercy Helpline Initiative (MHI) expresses deep concern over the reported abuse of a 7-year-old child in Anambra State. If established, such conduct would constitute a grave violation of a child’s rights, dignity and safety. No child should face violence or degrading treatment under any circumstance.
MHI commends the Anambra State Police Command and community members whose intervention reportedly led to the child’s rescue and the arrest of the suspect. We urge the relevant authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly, transparently and in accordance with Nigerian law, with the child’s best interests remaining paramount.
We call on the Anambra State Government and relevant child-protection authorities to ensure that the child receives appropriate medical care, psychosocial support, protection from further harm, safe accommodation where necessary, legal and social support, and continued follow-up to safeguard her wellbeing.
MHI recognises the importance of due process. Where the allegations are substantiated, appropriate accountability measures should follow in accordance with the law. Child protection requires sustained commitment from families, communities, government, law enforcement, schools, faith communities and civil society—not merely a response to public outrage.
We urge all Nigerians to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of child abuse to the appropriate authorities rather than ignore them.
