A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally affirmed former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election, despite controversy surrounding its national convention and growing internal divisions within the party.

The faction ratified Jonathanโ€™s candidature during a convention held on Friday, positioning the former president as its standard-bearer ahead of the next general election.

The development comes days after the group granted him a waiver to participate in its presidential process.

Organisers of the convention alleged that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and security agencies attempted to frustrate the exercise by restricting access to the venue and creating logistical obstacles for delegates and party officials.

The faction also accused the police of acting in a manner that hindered lawful political activities, claiming that some delegates and supporters were prevented from participating fully in the convention proceedings.

Neither Wike nor the Nigeria Police Force had officially responded to the allegations at the time of reporting. However, the FCT minister has consistently denied accusations of interfering in internal party affairs, despite remaining a central figure in PDP political disputes.

Jonathanโ€™s emergence further complicates Nigeriaโ€™s opposition landscape, coming at a time when major parties and political coalitions are concluding their primaries and positioning candidates for 2027.
