Public primary and secondary school teachers across Oyo State have commenced an indefinite withdrawal of services following a directive from the national leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).
In a circular signed by Comrade Salami B. Olukayode, State Secretary of the Oyo State Wing, the union instructed all teachers to stop work effective Monday, June 1, 2026, until further notice.
The action comes in response to the continued detention of teachers and learners abducted in recent weeks.
According to the union, the lack of progress in securing their safe release has created widespread fear among educators, discouraged parents from sending children to school, and heightened tension across communities.
“This action was taken to further call on the government to intensify strategies towards bringing the abductees back safely and without any further delay,” the statement read.
The NUT noted that while teachers should remain law-abiding and stay safe at home, the union stands in solidarity with the victims and their families.
It pledged to continue lawful engagements with government authorities until the abductees are rescued.
The suspension of teaching activities is expected to significantly disrupt academic activities across Oyo State, as schools remain closed pending further directives from the union’s national leadership.
