Sixteen inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Keffi, Nasarawa State, in the early hours of Tuesday after breaching the facility’s security and attacking officers on duty.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) confirmed the incident in a statement by its spokesman, Umar Abubakar, saying five personnel sustained injuries, two of them critically.
“Seven of the escapees have been recaptured, while a manhunt is underway for the remaining nine,” the statement said.
The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, who visited the centre, ordered an investigation into the incident and warned that any staff found culpable would face sanctions.
He also directed a joint search operation with other security agencies and urged residents to report suspicious movements to the nearest security post.
Nwakuche assured the public of the service’s commitment to safeguarding custodial facilities across the country.
