The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has pledged its support and collaboration with the Bayelsa State Government as the state intensifies preparations towards hosting the 2028 National Sports Festival (NSF).
SWAN National President, Mr Isaiah Benjamin, through a statement by the Association’s Secretary-General Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, gave the assurance during an inspection tour of ongoing sports infrastructure projects in Bayelsa State, led by the Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Daniel Igali, recently.
The inspection formed part of activities marking Bayelsa State’s 30th anniversary and provided an opportunity to assess the level of preparations towards the state’s proposed hosting of the national sporting event.
President Benjamin, who expressed satisfaction with the projects inspected, commended the Bayelsa State Government under Governor Douye Diri for its investment in sports infrastructure, describing the ongoing developments as significant to the growth of sports in the state and Nigeria at large.
The SWAN President visited the 30,000-capacity Igbogene Stadium, the 5,000-capacity stadium at Sampou, the Wrestling Gymnasium and the training football pitch behind the Government House in Yenagoa.
Speaking after the inspection, he expressed appreciation to the state government for the opportunity to witness its ongoing sports development initiatives.
“I want to first thank the Bayelsa State Government, through the Honourable Commissioner, for the honour of joining in the celebration of Bayelsa State at 30 years since its creation. It is indeed a great privilege.
“We have visited several ongoing projects, and I can say that Bayelsa is making commendable progress. The preparations are extensive, and I want to appreciate His Excellency, Governor Douye Diri, for investing significantly in sports,” Benjamin said.
He reaffirmed SWAN’s readiness to collaborate with the state government and relevant stakeholders to support efforts towards hosting a successful 2028 National Sports Festival.
Benjamin noted that the association, as the umbrella body of sports journalists in Nigeria, would continue to promote sports development initiatives, provide professional media coverage and encourage partnerships that contribute to the growth of sports across the country.
He added that the ongoing investments could deliver benefits beyond the festival by creating opportunities for grassroots talent development, improving training facilities and strengthening Bayelsa’s capacity to host major sporting competitions.
SWAN reiterated its commitment to working with governments, sports federations, corporate organisations and other stakeholders to promote sports development, strengthen grassroots participation and support initiatives that provide sustainable opportunities for Nigerian athletes.
