Nelson Mandela Int’l day: MHI honours legacy service, calls for action against injustice

The Mercy Helpline Initiative (MHI) joins the global community today, July 18, 2026, in celebrating Nelson Mandela International Day under the theme: “It is still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity.”

As an organization dedicated to “Giving Relevance to Life,” Mandela’s legacy of service, justice, and reconciliation deeply inspires our work. For 67 minutes today, the world is called to serve others—one minute for each year Mandela fought for freedom and human dignity.

MHI’s mission mirrors Mandela’s lifelong commitment to the vulnerable. We have responded to school abductions, advocated for abused children like the 10-year-old Ondo girl tortured by her father, rehabilitated inmates, and mediated communal conflicts. We have established Peace Ambassador Networks, initiated Community-Security Dialogue Platforms, and introduced restorative justice circles where healing triumphs over vengeance. These are our contributions to combating poverty and inequity.

Mandela said, “It is in your hands now.” MHI calls on all Nigerians to take action: protect children from abuse, speak against injustice, support the vulnerable, promote reconciliation, and build peace in our communities. Every small act of service matters.

We call on governments at all levels to invest in child protection, skills acquisition for youth, inmate rehabilitation, and community development. Justice must not be delayed for victims like the Ondo girl. Our children deserve safety and dignity.

As we honor Mandela today, let us remember: Every life matters. Every action counts. It is still in our hands to build a Nigeria and a world where justice, peace, and human dignity prevail.
