The Federal Government has endorsed Muhammad Bello Bala Shagari for leadership of the Non-Aligned Movement Youth Organization (NAMYO), the ministry said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the endorsement was contained in a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development.

The ministry described Shagari, Nigeria’s National Representative to NAMYO and Vice Chairperson for the Africa Region, as an accomplished youth leader with extensive experience in youth development, public service and international diplomacy.

It said Shagari’s track record, integrity and leadership qualities, alongside his contributions to youth participation, international cooperation and constructive engagement, positioned him for higher responsibility within the organisation.

According to the ministry, Shagari, a former President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), had distinguished himself through his involvement in youth advocacy, international relations and youth diplomacy at national and international levels.

NAN reports that NAMYO was established in 2022 following a recommendation by the Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement and is headquartered in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The organisation brings together young people from the 121 member states of the Non-Aligned Movement, with a mandate to promote youth cooperation, leadership, peacebuilding, sustainable development and international solidarity.

The ministry said the forthcoming election was significant because Shagari, if elected, would become the first elected Chairperson of NAMYO since its establishment.

It said his election would strengthen Nigeria’s role in youth diplomacy within the Non-Aligned Movement and enhance the country’s contribution to South-South cooperation and international youth engagement.

The ministry expressed confidence that Shagari would provide effective leadership and contribute to advancing youth cooperation, peacebuilding, sustainable development and international solidarity among NAM member states.

Shagari is the grandson of the late Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, GCFR, Nigeria’s first elected President. (NAN)
