The attention of the Kwara State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has been drawn to a purported election held at the Correspondents’ Chapel today (Saturday November 1st, 2025), which reportedly produced a new leadership of the chapel.

It has to be made categorically that there was no election whatsoever in the Correspondents’ Chapel following the failure of the chapel’s Credentials Committee to comply with Article 6 (6) of NUJ Constitution. Any candidate that emerged from the purported election without recourse to the State Council of NUJ as spelt out in the NUJ Constitution does not represent our Union. Thus, it amounts to an exercise in futility.

If a group of individuals had resolved to intentionally and flagrantly disobeyed the NUJ Constitution under the pretext that “no consequences afterward” is a wishful thinking. Before now, we have watched how some individuals vowed to proceed with the processes leading to the election, notwithstanding whether their actions negate the spirit and letters of NUJ Constitution.

In spite of the violation of the NUJ Constitution from the timing of the composition of the Credentials’ Committee of the chapel, there was no remorse observed on the part of the committee to act according to the lawful directives, the illegitimate conduct that culminated in the purported election held today (Saturday).

It is against this background that the leadership of the State Council of NUJ wants to make it clear that in line with the NUJ Constitution, no substantive executive is in place presently at the Correspondents’ Chapel.

While steps are being taken to safeguard the image of the Union that is being deliberately dragged into the mud, arising from the misconduct of some individuals, who believe they tower above the Union and NUJ Constitution, members of the public are hereby admonished not to, on behalf of NUJ, transact businesses with the Illegitimate Executive that emerged from the purported election at the Correspondents’ Chapel as any organization or individual who does so, is at his or her own risk.

With this development, members of Kwara NUJ at various chapels are urged to remain calm and await further directive as National Secretariat has been duly communicated right from the inception of the subterranean move with benefit of hindsight.
