In competitive electoral politics, few spectacles are as dangerous to constitutional democracy as unchecked opportunism disguised as strategic alliance. What began in 2023 as an emergency tactical convenience has rapidly devolved into a direct threat against Nigeriaβs governing stability.
Nyesom Wike was rewarded with federal ministerial power after backing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the last presidential contest, but transactional politics always possesses an expiry date. Today, that fragile bargain has run its course.
From an objective public affairs standpoint, the ongoing confrontation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and the Progressive Governors Forum represents a necessary, courageous institutional correction.
The cold truth is that the presidency no longer needs the inflated swagger of an external broker whose real electoral capital is visibly drying up on his home turf.
The so-called Rainbow Coalition promoted by Wike is a transparent contradiction that violates every known tenet of party discipline and administrative accountability.
He seeks to institutionalize political polygamy, enjoying supreme executive grace in Abuja while financing subversion against state executives across the country. Stripped of flowery rhetoric, this contrivance asks the ruling platform to accept a bizarre arrangement where one man claims virginity at the governorship level while carrying a full-term pregnancy for the ruling party at the presidential level.
He demands to remain an untouchable Peoples Democratic Party kingpin on paper, a powerful cabinet member by appointment, and an opposition wrecking ball against legitimate ruling party structures. He claps for the head in the presidential villa while deploying knives to cut off the legs in state capitals.
The Progressive Governors Forum, under the resolute leadership of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, deserves complete public defense for rejecting this absurdity and declaring it dead on arrival. The governors correctly resolved that they will not support, endorse, or tolerate any arrangement that weakens the ruling party or sacrifices its candidates at any level. In modern electoral mechanics, governors are the authentic custodians of party stability, voter mobilization, and legislative coherence.
They immediately recognized that the political bulldozer brought in during 2023 was quietly reversing its tracks to demolish their own foundations. Allowing an unelected appointee to sponsor rival candidates against sitting governors is institutional suicide, and the governors acted with impeccable foresight by slamming the door shut.
The territorial arrogance behind Wikeβs maneuvers reveals why the governorsβ rebellion is vital for party survival. In Imo State, Wike launched a calculated attack against Governor Hope Uzodimma, seeking to prop up rival figures and questioning the very chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum.
In Kwara State, he targeted Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, attempting to exploit aggrieved defectors and rehabilitate dynamics that the historic Otoge revolution decisively defeated. His recent media outings also insulted Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, confirming a reckless pattern of hostility against state chief executives.
When an appointed minister uses national television to ridicule the elected leadership of the governing party, he ceases to be an asset and becomes an insufferable liability.
Veteran broadcaster Reuben Abati offered an accurate diagnostic when he labeled the minister an amphibious character, neither genuine toad nor authentic frog, properly belonging nowhere. Wike built his contemporary brand on gutting the Peoples Democratic Party when his personal presidential ambition hit a brick wall.
The ruling party harvested the immediate dividends of that implosion in 2023, but character is like smoke that cannot remain contained forever. An operative whose career is anchored in zero-sum self-preservation will treat any house as disposable firewood the moment his personal ballot paper priority is challenged. The governors recognized that the very venom Wike used to destroy his own party was being imported through the back door to poison the All Progressives Congress.
The myth of Wikeβs personal electoral invincibility evaporates the moment it is subjected to detached empirical examination. The perception that Rivers State exists as a private asset to be delivered on command was tied to specific, controversial conditions in 2023 that cannot be replicated today. Back home in Port Harcourt, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has systematically dismantled the godfather architecture and taken over the levers of state administration.
A politician whose home front is burning in open revolt cannot credibly boast of commanding three or four external states. Without presidential protection and federal instruments, the ministerβs swagger diminishes to hollow television theater. The Progressive Governors Forum recognized this vacuum and rightly called a bluff built on rented bravado.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu built his legendary political journey on party building, organized teamwork, and deference to state executives. He knows that winning a presidential election requires disciplined governors who command ground operations and maintain legislative majorities. Indulging Wikeβs selfish agenda would produce a fractured National Assembly where a re-elected president is left stranded with a hostile legislative majority.
Sacrificing the loyalty and unity of his own governors to appease an untrustworthy lone ranger harboring presidential ambitions for 2031 would be an unforgivable strategic blunder. The institutional authority of the presidency must lean entirely toward the governors who maintain the ruling platformβs grassroots architecture.
The verdict from public analysis is definitive: the Progressive Governors Forum acted with supreme discipline by extinguishing the Rainbow Coalition. Party governance cannot operate as a private buffet where an individual harvests federal privileges while sabotaging the partyβs subnational foundation. Nyesom Wike must be compelled to make a decisive choice: either submit completely to party supremacy, respect sitting governors, and register as a disciplined foot soldier, or relinquish his ministerial post and test his actual popularity in the open street.
The Progressive Governors Forum has stood its ground against political blackmail, and every lover of stable governance must commend them for drawing the line.
