Professor Julius Afolabi Falola joined the Department of Geography, Bayero University, Kano, as an Assistant Lecturer in 1980.
Through unwavering dedication, distinguished scholarship, and exemplary service, he rose through the academic ranks to become a Professor in 1995. Following an outstanding career spanning four decades, he retired from active service in 2020 at the age of 70, having rendered 40 years of meritorious service to Bayero University, Kano.
Throughout his illustrious academic career, Professor Falola made immense contributions to teaching, research, and mentorship. He taught a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Research Methods, Qualitative and Quantitative Techniques in Geography, Natural Resource Management and Climate Change, Land Resources Development and Administration, Project Planning and Evaluation, Land Policy and Agrarian Transformation, Land Resources and Development Theory, Energy and Environment, and Drylands in Geographical and Historical Perspectives.
A passionate mentor of scholars, Professor Falola has supervised countless undergraduate projects and Master’s dissertations, as well as 37 doctoral theses. Remarkably, 16 of these PhD candidates were supervised after his retirement while serving Bayero University as a contract staff. He continues to contribute to academic excellence through seminar presentations at Bayero University and currently serves as a contract staff at Northwest University, Kano, where he supervises both Master’s and PhD candidates.
Professor Falola’s commitment to university administration is equally distinguished. He served as Level Coordinator, Head of the Department of Geography, an active member of the University Senate, and Chairman or member of numerous strategic committees, including the Faculty Research Committee, Senate Business Committee, University Prize Award Committee, Senate Standing Committees on Examination Regulations and Examination Administration, University Public Lecture Committee, Fees and Charges Committee, and University Scheduling Committee, among many others.
His scholarly leadership extended beyond the classroom. He served as Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of Bayero University Press and edited numerous academic books and journals within and outside the University. He also served as External Examiner to several prestigious Nigerian universities, including Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto; the University of Jos; Federal University Kashere; the University of Maiduguri; and the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.
Professor Falola has also contributed immensely to higher education governance by serving as Chairman or member of visitation panels to several institutions. Nationally, he rendered distinguished service to the Nigerian Geographical Association, culminating in his election as its National President. His excellence has been recognised through numerous national and international scholarships and honours, including the prestigious European Economic Community Fellowship for a Postgraduate Diploma in Rural Policy and Project Planning at The Hague.
Professor Julius Afolabi Falola’s outstanding achievements in scholarship, mentorship, academic leadership, and dedicated service have left an enduring legacy at Bayero University, Kano, and in the wider academic community.
