NUT Decries Poor Funding of Education, Demands Better Pay for Teachers

The Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, has raised concerns over the poor funding of education in the country, calling for urgent government intervention to reverse the growing decline in the sector.

The union made its position known in Kano during the launch of the “Go Public Fund Education” campaign, an initiative aimed at drawing attention to the deteriorating state of public education and the increasing number of out-of-school children across the country.

The campaign seeks greater investment in public schools, improved learning facilities and stronger support for teachers as part of efforts to address challenges affecting the education sector.

Deputy National President of the NUT, Kizito Kalu, also called for improved salaries and welfare packages for teachers, stressing that better remuneration would boost their morale, efficiency and overall performance.

He urged governments at all levels and other stakeholders to prioritise education funding, describing it as essential to developing human capital and securing the future of the country.

The union says sustained investment in education remains critical to reducing the number of out-of-school children and restoring confidence in Nigeria’s public education system.
