The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has advised Nigerian graduates to embrace entrepreneurship and innovation, stressing that the country’s labour market can no longer absorb the growing number of job seekers.
Emir of Kano and former Central Bank Governor, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has challenged Nigerian graduates to focus on creating opportunities rather than waiting for scarce jobs in the country’s increasingly competitive labour market.
Speaking at the maiden convocation ceremony of Miva Open University in Lagos, Sanusi said graduates must develop the resilience and creativity needed to thrive in a developing economy where formal employment opportunities remain limited.
According to him, individuals who identify problems and create solutions often become the drivers of national development, urging the graduating students to pursue innovation and self-development.
The monarch also defended online education, arguing that academic excellence is determined by the quality and rigour of learning rather than physical infrastructure. He noted that digital learning has expanded access to higher education, especially for women and young people facing social or economic barriers.
Sanusi further stressed that education should be viewed as a tool for personal growth and lifelong learning rather than solely as a pathway to paid employment.
The convocation saw over 1,200 students graduate, with outstanding performers receiving cash awards in recognition of their academic achievements.
