International youth day 2026: MHI celebrates youth resilience, insists sustainable development is achievable

The Mercy Helpline Initiative (MHI) joins the global community today in celebrating International Youth Day 2026, under the theme: “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.” We honour the indomitable spirit of Nigerian youth—young people who refuse to be defined by their circumstances, who rise despite poverty, insecurity, and limited opportunities, and who continue to dream of a better Nigeria.

Young people, do not give up. Your voice matters. Your ideas matter. Your future matters. Despite the challenges such as unemployment, violence, exclusion, and systemic barriers, you are not victims. You are the architects of a new Nigeria. The Sustainable Development Goals are not abstract ideals; they are achievable realities that depend on your energy, creativity, and determination.

MHI has seen what young people can achieve when given the chance. Through our Peace Ambassador Network, young mediators are resolving communal conflicts and preventing violence. Through our Community-Security Dialogue Platforms, youth are co-designing solutions to insecurity. Through our advocacy for skills acquisition, we are empowering young people to become entrepreneurs, innovators, and leaders. These are not exceptions, they are proof of what is possible when youth are trusted and invested in.

But young people cannot do it alone. Governments must create policies that prioritize youth employment, education, and participation in governance. The private sector must invest in youth-led enterprises and apprenticeship programmes. Civil society must continue to amplify youth voices. And the international community must support Nigeria’s youth as drivers of sustainable development, not as recipients of aid.

We call on all stakeholders to partner with MHI and other youth-focused organizations to scale interventions that empower young people, not as beneficiaries but as equal partners. When youth lead, communities transform. When youth are heard, policies become relevant. When youth are equipped, the nation prospers.

To every young Nigerian: Your dreams are valid. Your struggles are seen. Your potential is limitless. Rise, speak, lead, and never give up. Sustainable development is not just a goal, it is your inheritance. Claim it.

Every youth matters. Every dream counts. The future belongs to you.
