Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has empowered 1,900 registered butchers across the state with working tools as part of his administration’s commitment to strengthening the informal economy and creating sustainable livelihoods.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Governor’s Spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Thursday.

Speaking during the empowerment programme organised by the Kano State Cottage Trade and Street Hawking Agency at the Government House, Kano, Governor Yusuf said the initiative reflects his administration’s resolve to ensure governance directly improves the lives of ordinary citizens.

He described the butchering business as a critical sector that supports thousands of families, enhances food security, and provides raw materials for Kano’s leather and tannery industries.

The governor disclosed that his administration has already registered and profiled over 400,000 traders, artisans, and operators in the informal sector to ensure government interventions reach genuine beneficiaries.

Governor Yusuf also unveiled plans to establish Cottage Industry and Enterprise Hubs across strategic locations in the state to provide modern workspaces, storage facilities, business support services, training opportunities, and organised marketing channels for small-scale enterprises.

He explained that the hubs would include dedicated sections for butchers, meat processing, leather processing, and tannery operations to build an integrated value chain capable of creating thousands of jobs for young people.

The governor further announced a donation of ₦100 million to the Kano State Butchers Association to support members in expanding their businesses and improving their livelihoods.

He urged the beneficiaries to make proper use of the equipment provided and maintain high standards of hygiene and professionalism in their operations.

Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to implementing sustainable programmes that empower artisans, traders, and entrepreneurs, with the goal of formalising the informal economy, increasing household incomes, and positioning Kano as Nigeria’s leading hub for enterprise and industrial development.
