Host nation Mexico made a winning start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating South Africa 2-0 in the tournament’s opening match on Thursday night in Mexico City.
Mexico went ahead in the ninth minute after a costly mistake by South African midfielder Sphephelo Sithole. The error allowed Erik Lira to create an opening for Julian Quinones, who calmly finished to give the hosts an early advantage.
South Africa’s task became even more difficult when Sithole was shown a red card following a challenge on Brian Gutierrez. However, Mexico failed to capitalize on the ensuing free-kick opportunity.
The hosts eventually doubled their lead in the 67th minute through veteran striker Raul Jimenez, who headed home from close range at the far post.
The encounter was marked by further disciplinary issues, with South Africa’s Themba Zwane dismissed for violent conduct. Mexico also finished the match with 10 men after Cesar Montes received a red card deep into stoppage time.
Thursday’s fixture rekindled memories of the 2010 World Cup opener in South Africa, where the same teams faced each other. That match ended in a 1-1 draw, with Siphiwe Tshabalala and Rafael Marquez scoring for their respective sides.
In their next Group A fixtures, Mexico will face South Korea, while South Africa will take on the Czech Republic.
