The Mercy Helpline Initiative (MHI) has expressed deep concern over the recent attack on Lassa Day Secondary School in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, which occurred on June 29, 2026.

The body unequivocally condemn the act of terror against innocent students who were peacefully sitting for their NECO examinations.

Executive Director of the initiative, Samuel Solomon said preliminary reports confirm that one teacher lost his life, another was injured, and an uncertain number of students remain unaccounted for.

“While we acknowledge the swift intervention of security forces, which led to the rescue of some students, the situation remains dire, and the fate of many children hangs in the balance.”

MHI calls on the Federal Government, the Borno State Government, and all security agencies to:

1. Secure the immediate and safe return of all abducted students without further delay
2. Intensify security surveillance and protect all schools, particularly in conflict-prone regions, to guarantee that no child is forced to choose between education and safety
3. Ensure a thorough and transparent investigation and bring all perpetrators and their sponsors to justice

MHI stand in solidarity with the grieving families, the affected community, and the entire Lassa school staff. The recurring abduction of our children must not become normalized. It is a national emergency that demands decisive, sustained, and coordinated action.

MHI also acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of the military, police, and civilian joint task force for their ongoing search and rescue operations.
