The Kogi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of a 30-year-old teacher, Maryam Usman, who reportedly died a week after she was allegedly assaulted by the parent of a pupil she disciplined at a private school in Olamaboro Local Government Area.
The incident has generated public concern over the safety of teachers in the course of carrying out disciplinary responsibilities in schools.
Confirming the development on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, said the matter was reported as a case of culpable homicide at the Olamaboro Divisional Headquarters on June 25, 2026, following the teacher’s death.
According to the police, preliminary findings indicate that the assault occurred on June 18 at a Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, Okpo District, when a man and two women allegedly confronted the teacher over disciplinary measures taken against a pupil.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that on 18th June, 2026, one man, accompanied by two women, went to …..the school where they assaulted a staff member, Maryam Usman, aged 30, for disciplining a pupil,” the police said.
Police said the teacher suffered serious injuries during the attack and initially received treatment at a hospital in Ugbamaka. She was later transferred to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo after her condition worsened.
“The victim sustained serious injuries and was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital, Okpo, for further medical attention. She, however, passed away on 25th June, 2026,” the PPRO revealed.
The command disclosed that officers visited both the scene of the incident and the deceased’s residence after the report was made and carried out the necessary documentation.
According to the police, the deceased’s remains will be taken to the General Hospital in Ankpa for an autopsy and other medical examinations.
“The suspects fled before the arrival of the police, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend them. Upon their arrest, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet and comprehensive investigation,” the PPRO stated.
