The Department of State Services (DSS) has refuted claims that it arrested or detained renowned writer and academic, Prof Okey Ndibe, at Murtala Muhammed International Airport on June 1, 2026.

In a statement signed by Favour Dozie, Deputy Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, the Service explained that Ndibe’s brief interaction with DSS operatives was part of an ongoing review of old Watch-List Actions (WLAs), some dating back to Nigeria’s military era.

According to the DSS, the current Director-General ordered a comprehensive review of WLAs to prevent citizens from being embarrassed by outdated restrictions.

The Service further said the process involves routine engagement with individuals previously listed, to assess their travel history and current activities before final delisting.

It maintained that Prof Ndibe, who had been on the watchlist since January 29, 2013, was reportedly cleared after about an hour of interaction and escorted out of the airport.

The DSS noted that Ndibe himself acknowledged on social media that the operatives conducted themselves professionally and respectfully.

The Service emphasized that many Nigerians, including journalists, have benefited from this clearance process.

It cited the case of Mr. Lanre Arogundade, Executive Director of the International Press Centre (IPC), who was delisted in May 2025 after more than a decade on the watchlist.

Reiterating its commitment to fairness and respect for human rights, the DSS urged citizens affected by WLAs to formally report to its National Headquarters to facilitate ongoing reviews.

It assured that the effort to sanitize the watchlist system would be sustained in line with international best practices.
