MHI condemns Ondo child abuse, demands justice for victim

The Mercy Helpline Initiative (MHI) is deeply saddened and outraged by the recent incident in Ondo State where a 10-year-old girl was brutally punished by her father, Amos Paul, who allegedly used a hot iron to burn her private parts for bedwetting.

This act is inhumane and a gross violation of the child’s fundamental rights. The victim is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, for severe burns.

Executive Director of the
Initiative Samuel Solomon in a press release commends the Ondo State Police Command for the swift arrest of the suspect and the transfer of the case to the Gender Unit.

MHI calls on the Ondo State Government, the Federal Government, and the National Human Rights Commission to ensure the suspect faces the full weight of the law—this crime must not go unpunished; provide comprehensive medical and psychosocial support to the victim; strengthen child protection mechanisms at state and federal levels, including full implementation of the Child Rights Act; establish more accessible reporting channels for child abuse cases; and conduct public awareness campaigns on positive parenting and the legal consequences of child abuse.

This child deserves a better life. She deserves to grow up in safety, dignity, and love—not fear and pain. No child should ever suffer such cruelty at the hands of those meant to protect them. MHI stands with the victim and calls on all Nigerians to speak up against child abuse.

Every life matters. Every child deserves relevance.
