President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency, unveiling sweeping measures to reinforce Nigeria’s security architecture and confront escalating threats across the country.
In a personally signed statement on Wednesday, the President ordered an immediate expansion of the nation’s security forces, including the recruitment of an additional 20,000 police officers, raising the ongoing police enlistment to 50,000 personnel. He also authorised fresh recruitment into the Armed Forces as part of a broader mobilisation effort.
President Tinubu directed the Department of State Services (DSS) to deploy all trained forest guards without delay to comb Nigeria’s forests and dislodge terrorists and bandits hiding in remote enclaves. The agency has also been empowered to recruit more personnel specifically for forest operations.
“As a result of the emerging security situation, I have decided to declare a nationwide security emergency,” the President announced.
“We are responding by putting more boots on the ground, especially in security-challenged areas.”
He added that police authorities may now utilise National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps as temporary training depots to fast-track preparation of new recruits. Officers withdrawn from VIP protection duties are also expected to undergo rapid retraining before deployment to troubled locations.
Affirming the seriousness of the moment, President Tinubu said the country faces a critical phase that requires unity, vigilance, and a collective commitment to national security.
He urged citizens to support ongoing efforts, while commending security personnel for their resilience and dedication. The President praised recent coordinated operations that led to the rescue of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and 38 worshippers abducted in Kwara State, assuring that the rescue of remaining abducted students in Niger State and all Nigerians still in captivity remains a priority.
He reminded security agencies that Nigerians are counting on them, stressing that discipline, professionalism, and integrity must guide every operation.
“There will be no hiding place for agents of evil,” President Tinubu declared, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to restore peace and stability across the nation.
