Benue State Governor, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, has condemned the early morning attacks on Akpachi Village and the Otukpo-Nobi community in Otukpo Local Government Area, describing the killings as barbaric and a direct attack on the peace and security of the state.
The condemnation comes amid growing public anger in Otukpo, where residents earlier staged a protest over the worsening security situation, demanding urgent government intervention to end the recurring attacks.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, the governor said suspected armed herders invaded Akpachi Village between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m. on Sunday while residents were asleep. The attackers reportedly killed scores of people and left many others with varying degrees of injuries.
Governor Alia said he was deeply saddened that the attack occurred despite the ongoing efforts of his administration, traditional rulers and security agencies to promote lasting peace across the state. He vowed that those responsible would be tracked down and brought to justice.
The governor directed all security agencies operating in Benue to collaborate with their counterparts in neighbouring states, intensify surveillance and patrols across the affected communities and border areas, ensure the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted, and deploy additional personnel to prevent further attacks.
He also appealed to residents to remain calm but vigilant and to support security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.
While sympathising with the bereaved families and praying for the speedy recovery of those injured, Governor Alia reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of all Benue residents.
